![]() For a hack-and-slash, you just want to be able to say to a goblin “surrender or die!” and know that the goblin entry indicates they speak Common, so your Intimidate check is reasonable. That’s great for several types of campaigns. ![]() In fact, the PHB suggests that you can communicate with practically every being in the known multiverse if you know just 16 languages. The rules are designed for a campaign where you don’t really care about having a ton of languages in the world. I appreciate the language rules in 5e, but they rub me the wrong way. Longer, totally skippable version if you want to move on to my next post for the first entry. Though I’m going to be ignoring the game’s language rules for some worldbuilding. TL DR: Inspired by this thread, about what the creatures in the MM eat and how they’re cooked, I’m doing the same thing, but using the 5e Monster Manual.
